Oven Baked Onion Rings


Oven Baked Onion Rings. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they turned out. They were crispy, flavorful, and not oily at all. My least favorite part about eating onion rings is the greasy breading that comes with the cooking method. You don’t get that with these because they aren’t deep fried, they are baked. I thought they tasted nearly similar as well. These are best eaten immediately.

The Cheerios are a replacement for breadcrumbs. They have similar crunch and other flour alternatives are a bit expensive and I struggle to get them to respond like I want them to. When you grind Cheerios in a blender it makes a breadcrumb substitute that is cheap and easy to obtain. Obviously breadcrumbs can be used instead if that’s what you have. ⁣

1 egg⁣
1 cup Cheerios (depending on the size of your onion, I used exactly 1 cup. If you have a big onion you’ll want more) ⁣
1 medium sweet onion (150g)
1/4 cup tapioca flour (or cornstarch)⁣
1 tsp seasoned salt⁣

1️⃣ Preheat your oven to 400F. ⁣
2️⃣Grind 1-2 cups of Cheerios in a blender or food processor. Season with 1 tsp seasoned salt ⁣
3️⃣ Peel and cut a sweet onion into 1/4” rings ⁣
4️⃣Set up 3 Bowls. 1 with 1/4 cup tapioca flour, 1 with a beaten egg, 1 with the Cheerio flour. ⁣
5️⃣ Coat the onions in tapioca flour, then egg wash, then Cheerio flour. Place on a sheet pan. ⁣
6️⃣Bake for 10 minutes and then flip. Cook an additional 3-5 until desired crispiness is achieved. ⁣
