HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I’M GETTING ALL THE NUTRIENTS I NEED? ✨ I get this question at least once a week with my one-on-one nutrition counseling clients- and for good reason! Most of my clients have goals to eat a more plant-based diet (whether they’re new to the lifestyle or have been vegan for years!), and just want to make sure they’re making the best choices for their physical and mental health ?.
My answer is always multi-faceted:
✨Getting regular blood work and utilizing the results when working with a Registered Dietitian is the best way to make sure you’re getting everything you need. We can be eating the proper nutrients for our bodies, but we can’t determine how we’ll process them.
✨Eat a variety of foods. Studies show that getting a variety in your diet is one of the best ways to ensure getting the nutrients we need and keeps our gut microbiome diverse, which means a healthier gut (yay!). Try incorporating one new food a week to mix things up!
✨Make sure you’re taking a vitamin B12 vitamin if you’re plant-based (even 80%), and a vitamin D supplement if you’re in Canada or the Northern parts of the US. .
✨Work with a Registered Dietitian to make sure you’re getting the diversity of foods that you need. It can be confusing with all of the conflicting information out there about nutrition, but as RD’s, it’s our job to decipher through the research and help YOU!
