The difference in calories between these two meals isn’t huge at 172 calories, but taking away 172 calories in each of your 3 meals of the day would give you slightly over 500 calories less over the day. If you were trying to lose weight that is significant. A 500 calorie deficit per day will give you roughly 1 pound of weight loss per week. In times where I’ve attempted to maintain a calorie deficit I’ve found the most difficult part to be the decreased volume of food I was eating. Finding simple swaps like the one in this picture can make dieting a bit easier to accomplish. Maintaining the same amount of volume in your diet might help to feel like you aren’t actually in a calorie deficit. .

Spaghetti squash is a good swap for rice because it is bland tasting and takes on the flavor of whatever you are pairing it with. I don’t know many people who would choose spaghetti squash over rice, I know I wouldn’t, but sacrifices have to be made when dieting. The definition of a calorie deficit is practically synonymous with the word sacrifice. You could easily equate the calorie load of the spaghetti squash with an equivalent amount of rice and achieve the same goal but you would sacrifice on total volume. Understanding calorie balance and different ingredients will allow you to manipulate your eating in a way that works for you to meet your goals 😎
